Inspection Capabilities

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) encompasses a wide range of techniques used to inspect and evaluate materials, components, and structures without causing damage. These alternative NDT inspection methods complement traditional methods like ultrasonic testing, radiography, and magnetic particle testing. Here are some alternative NDT inspection methods:

Acoustic Emission Testing (AE)

AE monitors the release of stress waves or acoustic emissions from a material when it undergoes deformation or experiences an internal change. It is used for detecting flaws in structures, monitoring active systems, and assessing the integrity of pressure vessels.

Thermographic Testing (IR)

Infrared thermography relies on the detection of temperature variations on the surface of a material or structure. It is used for identifying defects, such as delamination’s, voids, or cracks, by detecting differences in heat conductivity.

Digital Radiography (DR)

DR involves using digital sensors instead of traditional film for radiographic inspections. It provides quicker results, better image quality, and easier data storage and sharing.

Guided Wave Testing (GWT)

GWT uses low-frequency guided waves that travel along the length of pipes or structures to detect corrosion, cracks, and other defects over long distances. It is ideal for inspecting pipelines and long-range structures.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)

PAUT utilizes multiple ultrasonic transducers that can be electronically controlled to steer and focus the ultrasonic beam. This allows for better defect characterization and inspection of complex geometries.

Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD)

TOFD is an ultrasonic technique that measures the time it takes for ultrasonic waves to diffract around defects in a material. It provides precise sizing and localization of defects.

Shearography

Shearography uses laser-based interferometry to detect changes in surface deformation caused by internal defects or stress concentration areas. It is especially useful for inspecting composites and adhesive bonds.

Remote Visual Inspection (RVI)

RVI involves using cameras and remote devices to inspect the internal components of structures or confined spaces. It is often used in the inspection of pipelines, storage tanks, and turbines.

 

Leak Testing

Various leak testing methods, such as dye penetrant testing, bubble testing, and helium leak testing, are used to identify leaks or seals in airtight or fluid-filled components, such as pressure vessels, pipelines, and refrigeration systems.

Ultrasonic Phased Resonance Testing (UPRT)

UPRT is used for inspecting large structures and composite materials. It applies ultrasonic energy at resonance frequencies to detect defects efficiently.

The choice of method often depends on factors such as the type of material, the size and shape of the component, and the specific defect or condition being assessed.

Classified Machinery Inspection

Pressure vessel inspection and class field plant inspection is a main competency of MDR Certification Engineers. Items are inspected and tested to AS3788 and the client’s specification.

Coating Inspection

Our coating inspectors are familiar with the limitations that various coating may have for their intended specific use. From HDPE coating for below ground piping to food grade coating for water storage and grain silos MDR Coating inspectors have the knowledge skills and experience to ensure the application process is correct in accordance to the specification limiting the exposure to NCR’s and insurance risk for your project.

Risk Based Inspection

Plant reliability and profitability are important performance indicators for oil refineries. The amount of inspection and maintenance resources that is devoted to process equipment effects the overall plant performance. Dedicating the same level of resources to inspecting and maintaining each piece of equipment is not cost effective and can lead to oversight of high risk equipment. Although in an operating plant, the number of high risk items usually exists in lower percentages than low risk items, an oversight in the inspection and maintenance of high risk equipment may produce catastrophic results. Risk based inspection (RBI) provides a methodology for prudent assignment of resources to assess and maintain equipment integrity based on their risk levels. (Jenny Simpson).
